Name: Casey Lockwood
Who are you in 90 characters or less? I am a mom of 4 littles and my passions are dance, fitness, food and coaching others to find their version of success.
Why do you teach/train?
I grew up participating in sports and dancing, so fitness was always my escape. But then as a new mom, I struggled with severe post-partum anxiety. My first experience with group fitness empowered me and supported me at such a difficult time in my life. I became driven to provide that same experience to others no matter their struggle or goals. I want people to feel like the best version of themselves after a class or a training session: fully empowered and supported.
What classes do you normally teach / what is your training expertise?
I studied Exercise Science and am a Certified Athletic Trainer. With my sports medicine background, I specialize in improving biomechanical deficiencies, prevention of injuries and overtraining syndrome, and progressions of movement patterns. I’m also a health coach with experience in extreme weight loss and fueling athletic performance. I LOVE teaching Les Mills classes. Weekly I teach Body Pump, Sh’Bam, LES MILLS GRIT, Body Flow, LES MILLS BARRE, and CXWORX.
How have you adapted your business to still inspire people at home?
Working with training clients, we’ve had to adapt to home workouts with whatever equipment each client has or finding creative solutions when there is no equipment available: we’ve used paint cans, backpacks of books and chairs as examples. Working with clients on their health, we’ve had to adapt to the craziness of the grocery stores right now and work to cook with what is on hand in a creative and healthy way. My clients and I use the Marco Polo app for check-ins that has allowed us to find some regular human connection. I am also offering Zoom classes a few times a week.
Are you currently offering virtual classes? If so, when and how can people join?
Yes! I am offering Zoom classes through Midlothian Athletic Club in Richmond, VA. People can visit the MAC Wellness and Fitness Facebook page or Instagram or reach out to me on my pages! The recordings can be found on YouTube. Exercise is so vital to mental health during this time. Visit my IG page for updates on my upcoming website with YouTube class options.
What advice would you give to other fitness professionals to get through these times?
GRACE!!!! For yourself. For your clients. For technology. It’s ok to be vulnerable and human! We are all working in new, uncharted ways. It can be a huge relief for clients or participants to see that we don’t fully have it together every single moment. I was even “Zoom-bombed” during one of our streamed workouts and as frustrating as it was, everyone participating offered grace to me and we ended up having a great laugh. Be creative and communicate with your clients and participants as much as possible. My clients have honestly been some of MY greatest supporters during this time. They have checked in with me as often as I check in with them.
How can fitness professionals lift each other up right now?
Check in with each other. SHARE how you are navigating technology and any hiccups you have had and how to troubleshoot them. REFER clients. None of us can create a fitter planet on our own. On the sidelines, there is always a TEAM of professionals working together to ensure the health and safety of the athletes. In fitness, there are so many different styles of training and a wide range of expertise in this field. Have a TEAM of people with different expertise to send clients to if needed. CHALLENGE each other. This is a great time to create fun ways to be accountable.
What is your favorite non-fitness outlet to cope with the current stress of the world?
My family. This is an unprecedented chance to create connections with my children that can sometimes get lost in the shuffle of activities, school and gym life. We just finished playing charades. We have tried cooking experiments and different crafts. It’s simple and fun. A great distraction!
How are you giving yourself #permissiontopause?
As a family, we have scheduled quiet time every day: we read or nap or just snuggle. Times when I feel my anxiety creeping in, I shut off social media and put my phone on do not disturb. But most of all just being really honest with what I’m feeling and dropping expectations for myself and those around me.
