5 Reasons to ‘Check In’ to Your Workout
Fill up your water bottle, lace up your shoes, chalk your hands….and update your Facebook status?
While checking in on social media may not seem like an obvious step in prepping for your workout, making it part of your routine can bring some of the best benefits of group fitness classes to your solo workout.
Whether it’s physically attending a fitness class or logging your workout digitally on social media or an app, “checking in” may be the jumpstart your fitness routine needs.
We spoke with Katie Wang, an instructor at Barry’s Bootcamp in San Francisco who also works at ClassPass. Wang, who lives and breathes group fitness, dished on why checking into your workout, even if you can’t make a class, is just the thing you need to elevate your fitness routine.
1. It Keeps You Honest
“Accountability is the No. 1 factor in maintaining a fitness routine,” says Wang.
“I know people often gripe about prices of boutique fitness, but those prices are really just holding you accountable to show up to your workout and get the most out of it!”
While digitally checking into your workout doesn’t carry the same financial penalty for missing class, checking into your workouts regularly is a habit-forming reminder to get in your exercise for the day. Checking in will help keep you accountable and less likely to fall out of a routine.
2. It's Motivating
There’s nothing like seeing your friends crush their workout to inspire you to do the same.
“I can take the exact same workout I teach at Barry's and try to do it on my own at the gym, but it's just not the same as when there's someone next to you experiencing the same struggle and working hard with you,” says Wang.
“There are certain people I look forward to working out next to because I know seeing her grab heavier weights will motivate me to grab those same heavies.”
When your friends’ workouts show up on your social feed, use it as motivation to add an extra mile or extra weight to your own workout.
3. It Allows You to Track Your Progress
Sometimes we need a reminder of just how far we’ve come.
While it can be frustrating when short-term improvements aren’t obvious, a digital record of your fitness progress can remind you how hard you’ve worked and the impressive progress you’ve made.
“Checking into your workout provides you with benchmarking points in your fitness journey,” says Wang.
“You can't expect results right off the bat, but by checking in you can look back weeks from now and recognize all the amazing work you have invested in your body and health.”
4. It Builds Community
Nothing brings people together like a good sweat session, and while group fitness classes are by nature community-driven, digital check-ins can build community too. Apps like Strava replicate the group fitness experience digitally to inspire and support you on your fitness journey.
“Group fitness provides an amazingly supportive community that is truly magical,” says Wang.
“You may not even know the name of the person next to you but when you're in that room together, sweating together, overcoming challenges together it creates an inexplicable bond."
When you’re marathon training and have a daunting long run up next on your training schedule, it helps to know there are others out there doing the same.
5. It Allows You to Learn (and Teach!) New Moves
Posting your workouts, and following friends who do the same, can inspire new workout moves for both of you. Adding variety and inspiration from an outside source can prevent your workout from becoming stale or boring.
According to Wang, there’s one move you should always borrow from the studio to add to your own workout.
“Never underestimate the power of a plank!” she says.
“Planks are a great foundational full-body exercise that you can do easily in the comfort of your own home. They engage your core, strengthen your arms and can even burn that booty if you turn your plank into a burpee.”
